Here are a couple of interesting facts: the name Thaipusam comes from the words “Thai”, which is the 10th month in the Tamil calender, and “Pusam”, the brightest star that is at its highest point during the time of the festival. And the Kavadi, which is what devotees carry in the religious precession you see in Batu Caves is a Tamil word meaning “flattened pole with loads at the ends”. Now that is something you can throw out at a dinner party.
Tomorrow we celebrate the festival that remembers the time when the goddess Parvati gave Lord Murugan a spear to vanquish an evil demon. We at PEMANDU would like to wish all of you celebrating a Happy Thaipusam and for those of you who are not, have a great day off!
